April events

The executive board hired for the 2011/2012 term is leaving tomorrow for the NACA conference where they will showcase performers and pick the majority of our programming. How fun! Take a look at the events for the month of April that we have put together for you:

4/6: Capture the Flag, 8-10pm campus-wide.
4/11: Cosmic Bowling, 9-midnight.
4/13: Spoken Word by Dynamic Duo, 8pm in the Underground.
4/14: Comedian Pete Lee, 8pm in Blades.
4/15: Gladiator on the Quad, 11:30am-3pm.
4/16: Founder’s Dance, 9-midnight at the Grand River Center.
4/18: Easter Egg Dash, 10pm on Chalmer’s Field.

If you are interested in participating in Capture the Flag, sign-up in the UPC office located in the Underground; participants will be divided into teams after sign-up is complete. The game will span through areas of south campus and the winning team will receive free pizza.

Hi again! Wow, we really slacked on the tumblin’ for a few, huh? Our apologies, but we have been reliving our hypnosis show with Jim Wand! That weird picture? That’s werewolf Jay attacking Leif! We had an outstanding attendance for that event; all photos from the event are on UPC’s Facebook fan page for your viewing pleasure. Last night was the Big Bang debate, where two professionals presented their views regarding the event and whether Christians should accept the theory. Again, another outstanding attendance and very well received by UD as well as the community :) We also have TWO trips coming your way! One to Sundown Mountain and another to Kalahari Indoor Water Park; check out the events on our Facebook page for details. And we have a surprise for you… UPC is throwing another Chapel Rave! That’s right, on March 5th following the Kalahari trip. Don’t miss it because the last one was epic and this will even top it!

Did everyone survive Snowocalypse 2011!? The above video is a little treat for those of you who like to partake in snow shenanigans… step up your game.

Yesterday’s meeting was canceled due to the blizzard, but we will resume with our weekly meetings next Wednesday at 3:30pm in the Babka room of Peters Commons. Free tomorrow night? Join us for our Welcome Back Bash in Blades for master hypnotist Jim Wand! He will perform mind tricks at 5:30pm in the cafeteria, followed by his hypnosis performance at 8:00pm in Blades. If you have never been to a hypnosis show, you won’t want to miss this one! Bring your friends and be prepared to laugh :)

UPC welcomes you back to school for the spring semester! We hope everyone is well-rested and ready to enjoy another semester full of outrageous UPC events. Last night when the executive board met, we discussed throwing in a few more surprise events in the coming months, one of which was the Chapel Rave (part deuce). If there is anything special you would like to see, contact UPC and we’ll conspire to throw it together this semester or next. We don’t ask for your input just for giggles, it’s because we love meeting your expectations and bringing events to campus that you’ll enjoy. We’re giving you the rest of January to settle into your routines because coming next month in February, we have a handful of events for you:

Feb. 4th, UPC hosts hypnotist Jim Wand at 8:00pm in Blades Hall; at 5:30pm, he’ll be wandering campus doing mind teasers! You don’t want to miss this as he has been to campus frequently and always puts on a good show.

Feb. 11th is perhaps our new favorite event: BUILD-A-BEAR! That’s right, show up in the Underground between 11am-3pm to stuff a skin. We began this event last year and it was a huge hit, so be sure to get there early!

Feb. 15th we are trying something a little new for campus: a Creation vs. Evolution Debate. At 7pm in Blades, two accredited professionals of opposing sides will present their arguments. We’re anticipating this to be quite interesting, so don’t miss out.

There are two more events that are being planned for the month of February, but once we hash out the details, you will be the first people we tell! In the meantime, enjoy the above song “Sinking Feeling” by Roisin Murphy and we will see you at the events, or feel free to swing by our office to chat because we love visitors :)

Boo! Sorry for the delayed update, as UPC has been busy preparing for tonight’s events! From 7pm-9pm, we will be shuttling students to & from the Dubuque Jaycee’s Haunted House at the county fairgrounds. Sign up with Emily (look for the ballerina) inside of Peters Commons in order to go. The first 70 students with ID are free; additional students & guests are $7.

After that, stick around Blades for our Halloween dance from 10pm-12am. Bring your Halloween spirit for a chance at winning Best Costume, or show off your moves in a Zombie Dance-off! We provide the snacks, games, & ghouls :) mwuahaha!

Stay ahead of the rush! Sign-up for our trip to the Mall of America on November 6th. We will be departing campus at 5:30AM & returning at 11:00PM. This trip is only $10 for undergraduates & $15 for graduates/guests. Sign-up in the UPC office located in the Underground or outside the cafeteria during lunch & dinner hours.

YIKES-A-BEE! Next week is Homecoming, which means UPC is crazy busy preparing for a week’s worth of fun-filled events! We’re all very excited about this year’s events and performers that we’ve brought campus - can’t wait to see all of you out there enjoying the festivities and celebrating our Homecoming :) Below is a rundown of our events for the week:

Monday: Pajama day! It’s as easy as rolling outta bed and walking to class. Also, our annual Cosmic Bowling event for students with proof of student ID. From 9pm to midnight, you can bowl for free underneath black lights at Bowling & Beyond.

Tuesday: Dress as your favorite professor day. Imitate the science professors by wearing a lab coat or tell some wacky jokes Dick Smith style. Use your imagination, maybe you’ll even get some extra credit for a killer outfit!

Wednesday: Celebrity day! Use today to interupt people obnoxiously a la Kanye West or bust out those fist pumps. Later on at 8pm, c’mon over to Blades for our Battle of the Sexes comedy event. Cristela Alonzo and Rajiv Satyal engage the audience by discussing the stereotypes and mysteries of both sexes! This is bound to be HIGHlarious.

Thursday: Dress in 50s & 80s attire day. Get hyped up for the Homecoming theme of Back to the Future by celebrating in according attire! Guys and gals, whip out those cuffed jeans and side ponytails!

Friday: Sprit day! Get decked out in blue and white to show your school spirit. Wanna see a rockin’ concert that night? Swing by Chalmer’s Field after the pep rally for live music by Nothing More. These guys are intense - we guarentee they will rock your world!

Saturday: The final and (in my opinion, most fun) day of Homecoming week! From 11am to 4pm, enjoy the Festival on the Quad. We’re providing a mechanical bull and obstacle course donned with a giant T-rex! Also partake in events and fun things provided by other organizations. And to wrap up the week is the Homecoming dance held at the Grand River Center from 9pm to midnight. Again, follow the theme with 50s and 80s attire while you dance amongst features from Back to the Future - including a DeLorean :) Send all song requests to upc@dbq.edu. SEE YOU THERE!

Hey gang, UPC has another slew of events headed your way! Tomorrow, Saturday 25th be sure to swing by our pre-game tailgate in the Bennett parking lot at 4pm. Brats, burgers, and drinks are free to students with proof of ID.

If you LOL’ed at the clip above, come see Mike E. Winfield’s live performance on Tuesday, Sept. 28th. The show will be in Blades at 8pm. The UPC staff loved his performance at NACA and we hope you will too!

And finally, UPC’s annual trip to Six Flags: Fright Fest is upon us (ooh, ahh). On Saturday, Oct. 2nd, we will leave campus at 9am and return around 1am. The ticket you pay for is general admission; if you desire to enter the haunted houses, that is an extra fee to be paid at the attraction. Also, be sure to bring warm clothes and money for food. Interested? Sign up in the UPC office located in the Underground or look for us outside of the cafeteria during lunch and dinner hours.

Welcome back, fellow Spartans and loyal UPC followers! For all of you new students, University Program Council is the central programming board on UD’s campus, responsible for bringing you all kinds of free entertainment, from musical and comedic performances to day trips, novelty activities to special events. The cool part is that you can be apart of UPC, too! Just attend our weekly meetings and help us organize and prepare for our roster of about 40 events this year, plus get in on all kinds of sweet deals, like having dinner with a performer, free goodies, and just being part of a great group of people! Check your UD email for updates on events and meeting times/locations. Anyway… yesterday we began another school year complete with campus events that we (your executive board, above, in NACA attire) are excited to share with you :) In April, we spent a few days in MN for the National Association of Campus Activities conference, where we showcased tons of performers and vendors; those we thought you’d like, we booked! From that list was Soundrabbit, who gave us quite the musical performance on Saturday night on the quad. Although we loved seeing all of those in attendence with us, we want to see even more of you, which is why we’re having our big Welcome Back Bash THIS Friday night! Never been to a Foam Party before? Now is your chance! UPC is providing rockin’ music and crazy lighting effects, mixed with a giant pit of foam for your entertainment! Join us this Friday, Sept. 3rd on the Peters Commons patio from 9pm-12am. Prizes will be given away & lots of fun will be had! You really don’t want to miss this party.
